Dr. John S. Lofty

Humanities Fall 2008

Regent's American College London is pleased to announce the arrival of Dr. John S. Lofty, visiting faculty member in the department of Humanities for the Fall 2008 semester.

Dr. John S. Lofty, professor of English at the University of New Hampshire and former elementary and secondary school teacher specializes in English education for preservice teachers. He was raised in England, receiving his BEd from the University of London, his MA from Tennessee State University and his PhD from the University of Michigan.

Based on his study of a Maine island fishing community where he taught English, Dr. Lofty wrote the book Time to Write: The Influence of Time and Culture on Learning to Write. Now pursuing interests in educational change and school reform, he has studied the effects of state and national (UK) standards on elementary and secondary teachers' professionalism and recently had a second book published, entitled Quiet Wisdom: Teachers in the United States and England talk about standards, practice and professionalism.

His teaching interests include literature about representations of social class and literature for young adults and his personal interests include woodcrafts, sailing, and pilgrimage.
