Learning Outcomes
At completion of the course the student will have:
  • To introduce the significant philosophies, theories and applications of management thinking relating to planning, organizing, leading, motivating and controlling of personnel within a work environment.
  • To describe management processes, their theoretical bases and practical applications, so that the student can demonstrate the fundamental knowledge on which to apply and discern good management practice.
  • To use several and varied case studies for the student to apply this fundamental knowledge.
  • Presents management theory, classical to modern: the case-study approach to the functions of management, internal and external aspects bearing on managerial activities, and guides to decision-making.
Presentation

Power Point presentations for each chapter of the main text will be posted on the college intranet under BACL T Drive. Students are recommended to download the presentation ahead of coverage in class if they want to have a copy on which to make notes.  This syllabus is also posted on the same drive and is subject to change during the semester. Although the lecturer will alert students to changes, it is incumbent on each student to check the intranet for the latest version (as indicated by the date).  As shown above, students are often required to study cases or prepare materials ahead of class. Failure to do so or to attend class will impact the student’s grade (see Assessment below).  Some assignments are to be completed by teams. The lecturer will organise teams at the start of the semester and their make-up may change at mid-semester.
